See when they shut down the sluaghter plants in the United States it wasn't a good thing! I am against horse sluaghter but, now when a horse is going to be slaughtered they send them on long grueling trips to be even more brutally slaughtered then in the US! Yes, I want to help but really the only thing we can do is not to send a horse to slaughter at all and to reopen the slaughter plants in the US. I know its sad but it IS and improvement to how they are treated in Mexico and Canada.

I watched this appalling footage. We have moved backwards regarding animal welfare. I tried to fill out the form but I am not in the U.S. so was not allowed to do so.

I am sure that the majority of the people who signed the online petition to end US horse slaughter didn't give a seond thought to what would happen if it actually was banned. And here is the result. A campaign to end horse slaughter in other places is nice too, but you're not ever going to quench the demand for horse meat OR the demand for horse slaughter as a means of getting rid of (for lack of a kinder term) horses that no one wants or can afford to keep anymore.

I'm not saying I agree with horse slaughter. It hurts me as much as anyone to watch that clip. But horse slaughter just isn't going to get "wiped out" like this. if only the petition signers would have thought before they supported the closing of the US slaughter houses, we wouldn't have the problem of those crazy open double-deckers trucking down the streets of Mexico, nor would we have Juan with a whip in one hand and a machete in the other to slaughter the horse with.

The most effective way to move a campaign is either through peoples' hearts or their stomachs, and this campaign hits both angles. But just because it affects you strongly doesn't mean you ought to act without thinking. Use your brain, do research, talk to unbiased people about the subject. THEN decide which side of the fence you're on.

The HSUS doesn't care about how these horses are treated. They only care that this gets them closer to the point where no one owns, eats or uses any part of an animal. The misery of the animals is of no consequence and only helps their cause. This is why they petitioned to close the US plants in the first place. They knew that this would happen and didn't care about the consequences. So the answer is STOP supporting organizations that don't care about animals! HSUS and PETA aren't in it to help the animals, only their agenda. The answer isn't to close every plant and shove the misery where we can't see it. The answer is to have the plants right here where we can make sure tough laws ensure a dignified end to these animal's lives.

I bought my first horse from an auction and kept him until he died of natural causes 8 years later. He never went into the auction ring.

My ex-fiance bought his horse, who I currently own, from auction as well. He went into the ring at the end of the day, no one rode him in, no one was really around. It was between my ex and a killer. He was bought for $300. At the age of twelve, his suspensory has gotten so bad, he is no longer ridable.

The major part of the problem is not the killer buyers - in my area of the world, they don't usually outbid families for the horses. It happens on occassion, but usually if the killer sees a family bidding on the horse, they stop bidding.

The problem is the people sending horses they do not want to auction. My first horse was about 20 when he went to auction. He spent his whole life competing for people and when he could no longer do higher level competing, was his hard work rewarded with retirement? No, he was sent to auction with a horse dealer - no care for who got him or what happened to him.

Viking, the 12 year old, was worked beyond capacity for his young life, then sent to auction when he could no longer do what his owners wanted him to do. He was wearing road shoes when he was bought. Who tries to use a full thoroughbred for driving? They are not built for it, generally speaking.

So, why not start buying your horses from auctions instead of looking for that horse with papers? Especially if you are looking for a pleasure horse or horse that you want to show outside of breed specific shows.

Yes, part of the problem is also closing down the US slaughterhouses. Guidelines for slaughtering animals tends to much more strict in the US than in Mexico.

The best way to protect the horses is to let them be slaughtered on U.S. soils. Horse slaughter, as well as any animal slaughter, is a fact of life and until everyone in the world agrees to be a vegetarian (which I don't think I even want to go that far....we are omnivores!) slaughter is going to exist.

I find the agrument against horse slaughter to be a poor agrument and contridicting, especially in the horseworld where horse people get together at BBQ joints and eat BBQ at horse shows and rodeos.

If you are going to argue against horse slaughter, then be consistent and argue against all slaughter. But for me, as long as I eat cow, chicken and pig, then others have a right to eat horsemeat as well.

trust me...... if you end the horse's trip to mexico how much you wanna bet that their just going to start shipping them to France????

if it were to up me....reopen the slaughter houses.... I am not saying this because I hate horses....I love horses and that's why I think the slaughter houses should be reopen. Now these animals are in a hot double decker with 20 other horses and on the road for 10 to more hours....and the ones who arent making it to mexico and canada are just suffering by starving too death. There are WAY too many unwanted horses.

and if you want all of this too end....dont chase after the slaughter houses.....chase after the irresposible who cant keep their stallions off of their mares.

EDIT- Boxer Lover said it all.....even if there was a few violent words included lol.

I am going to give my honest opinion and sorry if I offend anyone.

Slaughtering is bad yes. But in the US at least the slaughtering was more human. I have read that there are laws being put on the trucking for the horses like rest time water trucking.

I honestly think that the problem here isn't slaughtering. We shouldn't have so many unwanted horses to be able to be trucked to slaughter. I think people should try to cool down on the breeding. I love riding horses and I go to a few shows, but I do it for fun and to just say hey look what I and my horse worked hard on. I don't do it for the money or prize. I think people should try to be not so competive. I bet if people stopped caring about who ran this time and who won this race and look at the body on this horse that more people would be content with what is born. You don't see women popping out babys saying oh this ones head has a small lump well get rid of and I'll try again. This is what alot of people are doing to our equines. Think about this next time you are breeding to get that georgous foal from this stud with so much show points you couldnt even imagin with this mare that has that award winning character. Think of how many horses there are that if you put as much work into as it would to train your foal would be just as good. We need to have patience with horses. And train them and not loose patience with them. We need to learn to take the broken ones and love them anyway. And accept inperfections.

I hope America can just start to accept things and hopefully turn this problem around. We have horses dieing and we are upset with the gov. for allowing it. But think. Its US, the horse entusiest that is creating the horses, giving up on them, and allowing them to go to sales where you know that there is a 50% chance that it will go to a nice loving home or go to a slaughter house.

Ugh, I hate people who argue that slaughtering horses is the same thing as slaughtering cows. It's not that same at all. The slaughter methods are really brutal for animals that can move a lot more quickly than cattle. And horses in this country are not raised and bred for meat. If they were just raised as food I would say it's not so bad. But when you're using that as your justification to send your gimpy 30 year old lawn ornament to slaughter I think you're just a disgusting human being.
Horses in this country aren't bred for consumption. So it's really sick to take your pet or old competition horse to the auction knowing that that is a very likely possibility. After all the work they've done for us, the shit they've put up with, it's sick to do that.
Cattle aren't asked to haul us around, be our companions, perform, race, jump, compete etc etc. In this country, they're not the same thing. And they never will be.

I couldnt even finish watching it because of the disgust. I honestly hope that every person that has ever hurt a horse like that will die a slow and painful death like every horse did. Maybe what they should do is release the horses into Texas to live wild?! I have no idea how we are going to solve this. Everytime we do something to stop it, some other country starts something up to keep horse slaughter going.

For Gods sake! You people are so fucking stupid! Do you have any idea what you did when you ended slaughter in the US???? Of course not!!! You have killed the horse market and in result, there are MORE ABUSED horses cause they cannot sell them now. There are more abused horses cause they are getting shipped all the way to Canada and Mexico without stopping. Way to go ASSHOLES! Now they are being stabbed multiple times to paralyze them, string them up by their hind legs and slit their throat. You know how they fucking die? They bleed out!!!! They are still alive feeling fucking pain. Way to go! You sure helped our horses!! Your right, Every voice does count! We are now trying to undue the damage you all have caused.

horse slaughter is a disgusting practice!! it should be illegal to export horses out of the US without investigation of where they will end up. it might be expensive but it needs to be done... even the horses with major behavioral issues and health problems should be given a chance... i would take one of them in a heart beat (i would take all of them if i were financially able... that's another issue... the economy..)
