I'm buying a colt and by the time I get him to my farm, he'll be about 8-10 months old. Now I know that I cant work him til he's much older, but I want to put a training surclingle on him to get him used to having a girth around him. I was just wondering if he'll be too young or if when I get him will he be able to carry the VERY lightweight surclingle?

Well, I have a1 1/2 year old and I started puting a very light one on her when she was about 14 weeks old. But, she might be different from your colt. I wouldn't try to put one on him until he's at least 12 weeks old. I really hpoe this helped!
Good Luck!!! |

Get a sheet or blanket for him then he gets used to wearing something, hind leg straps, going on over the head etc. All my longe line weanlings were taught to wear them - it stands them in good practice for later.

I'm all for doing whatever you can to desensitize them within reason.
I hand walk all my guys until they are a year old and then start ground driving them with the halter and long lines and a simple surcingle I had made. If you can get it to fit, go for it. I don't see any problems at all. |

My very own opinion (may not be the same as others) is... you can work your new colt from a very young age, but the key is - only short periods of time 10mins is long enough
- never make it an unhappy experience all ways you loads of praise and loads of treats... I wouldn't really lunge him yet.. I'm be inclined to put the surcingle on him (loosely but still firm) and then just lead him around while talking to him. That way you have got a kick start to when you do start his full training. Good luck with the little man |

Yeah it shouldn't be a problem. The more you work with him, the better off he'll be.
Good luck! |

Absolutely - but I would not lunge him yet. Put the surcingle on in a round pen and allow him to roam around freely while you watch in case of a problem. The more you do, the better they will be later when you start riding.
